Great article. I have found that the better our keyword/niche research and the higher quality backlinks we find, the less work we need to spend on the manual backlinking activitiy. Sounds obvious but rarely do we see clients with the right keywords.

I found your article very useful and will bookmark!

Personally I don't believe (and Google doesn't either) in (automatic) link building tools, services or software. I've been there and most of them are crap and give you very low quality links.
Although manual link building is a tough job, I do suggest to use the following methods:

Submit your site or blog to valuable (paid) directories, like:

DMOZ.org (free)
Yahoo! directory
BOTW
Business.com
lii.org
GoGuides
JoeAnt
Skaffe
Niche Directories

Give free stuff away and you will be amazed how many want to link to such pages

Create a unique article about a certain topic

Hire a high quality writer to write this article for you. Place it on your own site, don't submit this kind of high quality articles to article directories

Create middle quality articles and submit them to well established article directories like:

GoArticles.com
Ezinearticles.com

Ask friends to link to (Facebook, Linkedin, etc.) you or tweet about you

Create some lenses

The above will not take month's to accomplish, but will give you a good start to build links in a natural way.

Remember, great content will automatically result in natural quality links!

Hello just came across your site and i thank you for your story it was interesting. I am curious about link building for my site too. Have you used the scrapebox.com program? If so is it good? If not then what is the best program? Thank you.
